i brought this plant last year froma diy store and it was quite poorly looking so only cost me pence. since then it has grown taller but not wider. its like one single stem no branches coming off it. is there anything i can do to help it bush out or is it just a waiting game

Try pinching out main stem or cut back to height of your Fence so see if it grows side shoots.
I have one in my back garden and its growing bushy but not tall.

Clipping the tree down should encourage bushy growth and it won't be long before you're getting even more of those lovely new red leaves sprouting up. The instructions on the one I bought from a garden centre a few years ago encouraged regular clipping for that very reason. And it's worked fine!

if you cut out the top growth it will sprout from lower down the stem, from leaf buds in the gaps between the existing leaves and the stem. they are called axil shoots.
