Hi,I Have A String Bag Of Shop Bought Shalotts For Pickling And Have Some Left Over, Can I Plant Them And Expect Them To Multiply, I Am Informed That They Me Be Treated To Last Longer And Therefore Will Not Grow Or Grow As Good As the Ones Intended For Planting, Kind Regards Patricia.

I've used 'eating' shallots from Morrisons as seed shallots and they were fine. It's the luck of the draw but if you are not going to eat them all you have to lose is a few square feet of soil for the summer. In fact you should know in half a summer.

Hi Patricia and welcome to GoY. You've really answered your own question the shallots may have been treated to prevent growth. The only way you will find out if this is the case is by planting them.
