Cuttings from a tree

I have an Acer Tree growing in the wrong place now - the roots are under a path . Can I take cuttings and root them if so when is the best time to do it.

Most Acers are grafted onto a different root stock, so duplicating them by cuttings isn't really possible. Variable results from any seed produced too, and they need cold stratification to germinate.
