Living in W. Cork. Escallonia hedges have black spot on leaves and shedding at a considera ble rate. Have been advised to remove the hedging and start again. Your advice please.

I'm not qualified to answer this, but if black spot is a disease, then yes, you must destroy the plant as it could infect other plants. Usually by burning. Have you tried "googling" black spot? Someone else may be better at answering this for you.
