ground cover juniper or similar
I have two fairly steep banks facing a main road that seem only good for growing weeds ! I have looked at things like ground covering juniper plants, however I am not sure if they will survive, because the ground is surrounded by leylandi hedging, and of course the ground gets sucked dry. Any suggestions and directions would be most welcome . if it helps the banks face east so only get sun early on in the morning.

Agree with Spritz vinca should be ideal personally found the vinca minors better at ground cover . vinca majors can get tall and leggy esp the variegated type.Planted one vinca minor 2 years ago now covers area 10' x 8' on east facing bank.

thanks spitzhenry and bonkerbon, will I be able to pick-up Vinca minors anywhere ? Should I plant them at the top of the bank to trail down ? and about how far apart for fairly quick cover.

Hi ArryfromBarry (love the name!) you can pick up Vinca minor just about anywhere - shop about to be bargains - re the placing, depends on how deep your pockets are! THe more you plant, the quicker the cover. Plant them all over the bank - they will grow up your bank as well as down! Just space them about. Sid.

Vincas would trail nicely down your banks - they don't mind shade and will root themselves and spread. I think you would have to water them to get them established, but after that they look after themselves! You can get white, mauve, purple, double or single flowers, variegated or non-variegated leaved ones. Hope this helps.
