I would say that it was Sambucus nigra. Never seen one so woody and sparse. You normally cut them down to keep them compact and leafy. Should produce clusters of white flowers which turn to berries in autumn.

Your welcome add44, I have thundercloud Andy, mine does look similar to this Kildermore and i cut it down last year, not too bad this year but grew back exactly the same, bit disappointed with the shape really, mine has pink flowers, but didnt get the flowers last year after cutting back, but lots on this year. :^))

Sambucus, without a dought.
Prune without worry.
If you want a tree.. take out everything bar a leader. For a bushy shrub slice it across from about six inches. It Will recover.
