I have a property in South West France, and most of the shrubs and trees and covered in this crusty lichen - see photo. It does not seem to kill the shrubs, but it does look unsightly. What can I do?

I've no knowledge of this but common sense says that trying to take the lichen off could do more damage to the plant(s) than leaving it. You could try 'cleaning off' one branch and see how it compares. Lichen like that is usually looked upon as a sign of clean air- you should be glad!
