How tall and how old is your lilac ??
Best time to prune is October/November but if frost is forcast dont !! leave a couple of days
If a old specimen and over 5/6 years you can cut right back down , if younger and if multi stemed I would just take out maybe two or three , Lilacs are hungary plants and would like a feed in the spring of a general fertiliser .
They are known to get leggy one of the drawbacks if not pruned regulary
