i have a large tree fern i cover it up in the winter, the top of it seems to be getting narrower every year is this ok or can i cut the top down without doing damage, Alan thanks for the advice

you can cut the bottem of if ya wanted but as said the real living part is the top . you just got to let it go with the flow . evvery year is different and you could find later it gets thicker again .

No, you cannot cut the top off, that's the growing area, cut it off and the plant will die.
