The date is 5/17 and I live in Michigan. I heard you should cut back in early May. Is it too late to cut back now?
Oops guess it would help if I had the plant name!! Bee Balm

Bee balm. Is that monarda? If it is , has it finished flowering ? Thought it would be flowering later in the year and then you could reduce it if you want to after that. Or are we talking about a different plant?

If you mean Monarda didyma, unless your growing seasons are different from ours, it disappears in winter, then re -emerges in spring and flowers mid summer onwards. And you certainly wouldn't cut it or prune it in May.
