I have just bought a 'Solnum' plant from lidl - how do I know what sort it is and if it is not good for humans? The picture on the front shows something like a grapefruit only smaller

Erm, might be best if you can post a photograph of the label or picture, and/or the plant itself. Presumably its some kind of Solanum, is it supposed to be a climber?

Welcome to Goy Dragons. I saw the solanum melonga which you have bought, on sale in Lidl. It is commonly called an Eggplant. You should be able to eat the fruit but I am not sure whether it will grow to maturity in UK. Maybe Bamboo or another member will be able to tell you.

Solanum melongena is not frost hardy so wont survive outside in winter in most of UK.

Ah, yes, tis Aubergine and MG's right, its not frost hardy, needs to be grown in heated greenhouse over here I'm afraid. Do alright during the summer months (if we ever get any summer that is) but you'll lose it in winter.

Sorry Mg I spelled the melongena incorrectly. Thanks for correcting it.
Dragons in case you think of the Aubergine (Eggplant) as being a long black fruit which you buy in the shops have a look at the link below. It describes the various variations from around the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggplant

Thanks anyway Mg. It is hard enough to get your tongue around the latin names without someone confusing the issue by getting the spelling wrong. It does actually help if plants are correctly labelled which this one is not. I only knew what it was because having seen it, I googled it. Solanum is applied to the common potato (tuberosum), the aubergine (eggplant) melongena, the shrub with blue flowers (Glasnevin) as well as deadly nightshade (belladona) so the second part of the name is vitally important especially if someone considers eating the fruits.
