Hi Handyman you have asked this question now three times Third time lucky we hope. Bamboo asked for more information on your second attempt. She is very knowledgable about shrubs and if you answer what she has asked using the comment box under her comment then she will be able to help you by asking questions and getting the answers. All of the comments about your problem (whether from you or a member) would have been best added under your first question. You may not be the only person struggling with the same problem and keeping all the relevant information together helps other members too. All three of us who have answered your 2nd and third questions are from UK. We live in the south, London, In the southern half of Scotland and then in the North of Scotland and we experience different levels of sun and rain. As you get more experienced you will realise how important that is in identifying a problem.

Your shrubs are Berberis thunbergii atropurpureum - whether they're the dwarf 'nana' version I've no idea.
Did you plant your other bare root plants at the same time as the Berberis, or were they done earlier in the year? And if not, exactly when did you plant the Berberis? And did you plant them as soon as they arrived, or keep them for a while first? Please answer beneath, as requested previously.

Okay, so you planted them as soon as you got them - any idea what date you planted them?
If you planted out and the weather was already warm and dry, they would have needed a great deal of water on a regular basis to settle in. I'm also wondering what condition the roots were in when you received the plants - were there lots of broken ends of root, for instance, or were they terribly dry.
Berberis aren't particularly fussy about soil, grow almost anywhere, but they don't like waterlogged ground. I doubt the problem has been caused by you - I suspect the supplier sent you bare root plants which had either been ripped out of the ground without care, at a time of year when they should have been sent as container plants, or they had been in transit for along time and dried out on the way. Regular watering might revive them, but they may well all be dead.

You are having a hard time of it Handyman but you can't be doing too badly if all your other plants are happy. As gardeners we often have to count our blessings and forgive ourselves for the mistakes we make whether it is in buying inferior plants or buying from an unreliable source. We are none of us perfect and hopefully Bamboo will be able to help you sort out your problem. Gardening should help in your recovery from your stroke. Don't give up and keep us informed of how you are getting on.

bamboo i did not plant all the bareroot at the same time they are not dwarfs and i have watered them maybe to much? im pretty new to gardening but i have the bug bad ive even started seeds the stubborn little things who thought they needed so much care not just put them in the ground water and watch them grow some have to be kept in a dark room for 4 months and then they might take another 8 months to sprout or flower
for instance the bat plant not the scintific name but you can get them from summer hill seeds the flower looks like a bat
thank you

There is information about your plant on the following web site. I think you have been trying to get an answer on this question before. The best way to "talk" to other members is to use the comment box under your question. I have used it. Scroll down to below where I answered and you can ask for more clarification. Once you get used to finding your way around you will be fine and able to hold conversations with other members. We all had to find our way around and some of us needed more help than others. I hope this helps. http://www.finegardening.com/plantguide/berberis-thunbergii-f-atropurpurea-red-japanese-barberry.aspx
