This looks like the native Dog Rose, Rosa canina, Julie.

Although it did cross my mind that it might be -
Rosa spinossima 'Dunwich Rose'.

Our dog roses are all pink, Bulbaholic. I wondered if it was a Burnet rose, Rosa pimpernellifolia.

Hi bulbaholic/fractal cat and beattie - I thought it looked like a dog rose too but have only ever seen them in pink. Will check out your suggestions on the RHS site and Wiki.

Just checked out and think might be the Burnet Rose, also known as the Scotch rose apparently and quite common in coastal areas! Thanks everyone :-)
