worrabout a lantern tree - crinodendron hookerianum. In London mine survived the 12inch snow dump without losing a bud. and it is in a place that only gets morning sun. the foliage is a bit tatty sometime, but I just love those red lanterns.

A Crinodendron will not stand growing in constantly wet soil Lottieb, a dump of snow is one thing but to have wet feet all the time entirely another. I'd go with Noseypotters advice make a bog garden... then you can have rhum, gunera, all the plants/shrubs that like to sit with their feet in water - which includes some of the primulas.
