Thanks to everyone who sent advice about the ant problem. I've decided, after all, to live with my ants! I'll keep the traps I bought just in case they decide to come indoors - but they never seem to. They know their place! Today I was digging and found lots of eggs, and then a dead queen. Fascinating.
