Can you help identify this?

When we moved into this house I spotted a single flower among a tangle of honeysuckle and clematis. So I pruned around it to give it space and it has rewarded us with more flowers each year. I've asked several gardening friends about it, but have not been able to identify it so far.
It's a shrub that stands about 2 foot tall. The leaves seem to form in clusters, and the red/pink flowers are rather primitive, being more like coloured leaves than distinctive flowers.

I also think it is an azalea. the leaf form is right and i can make out very clear stamens etc.

Again, many thanks. With the info you gave me, I went back to my gardening books and I'm sure you are right. We are really enjoying its splash of colour at the moment.
