the large moth i asked the question about had two claw like extensions and when i touched it ,it seemed to walk on them ,it has been suggested it was a deaths head moth

The Death's head hawk moth has a very clear yellow 'skull' pattern on its thorax. [Also quite rare in britain] The claw like extensions will have been the front pair of the 3 pairs of legs they have. Initially I thought you meant there was only one structure that is why I suggested the proboscis.
