'Red wine' is Acer palmatum atropurpureum. All you have is a red Japanese maple that is marketed via various names as 'red wine', 'bloodgood' and ad nauseum et absurdam by cheaper garden centres and supermarkets.

From my experience they need good drainage as they hate getting too wet and the roots fail, they need loose slightly acidic soil as befits a tree that grows in undergrowth in woodlands. I add leaf mulch to try and recreate that. I keep all of mine (14) in pots as I have compacted clay soil. The leaves will burn if you keep them in windy areas and will die back.

Acer palmatum atropurpureum will tolerate more direct sun than most Japanese Acers, with that tolerance growing with age. I have seen fully grown ones in almost full sun in the US, which has far stronger sun than the UK. Younger they are the less tolerant and you get white patches on the leaves.

Keep them in sheltered spots with good drainage and a leaf mulch they need little else.

Did you put to much salt on you lunch or have vinegar instead of wine today? Why ask the question if you are going to be rude about the answers even before you get any?

Wow, I am amazed at your rudeness Japon!!!!

I think someone is just having a little game with us friends! lol :D Japon, I have Acer Red Wine. I don't know much about it. I'm not a professional. It is growing nicely in my pot. It would be happier in the ground but it is too windy in my ground for it, I do know enough to know that Japanese Maples are not good in windy sites as I killed one by planting it out, so I am growing it in a pot and will enjoy it for as long as it can stand being there. I bought it at my local nursery and noticed the other day that they are still selling it. I 'believe' it grows tall, but as I said, I'm not interested in it's eventual height in 10 years, just in enjoying it while I can. It really is a very beautiful plant....you would like it! Bless you my friend and may all your plants grow well and prosper :D

I noticed that nobody has mentioned the reason why acers are often grown in pots - they do better in ericaceous (acid) soil. If you want to grow them in the ground you should check the pH of the soil where you want to plant your maple. You can buy a soil pH level gauge relatively cheaply, just be aware that the soil acidity can vary a lot from one part of the garden to the next. Values from 1 - 6 are acid, 7 is neutral, and from 8 - 14 is alkaline. Some plants prefer alkaline soil (brassicas are a good example), while others prefer acid soil, such as Japanese maples (acers) and witch hazels. If planting in a pot you should put your Acer in ericaceous compost, preferably with a bit of John Innes no.3 mixed in, and water with rainwater rather than tap water. Good luck!
