Dianthus.
Bought a new plant this year and know nothing about them. Am dead heading, but will it live until next year to flower again or do I dig up? We do not suffer from frosts.

What variety of Dianthus? Most are perennial (though something like Sweet William or D. barbatus is biennial and will self seed easily) and enjoy a sunny, well drained position. I would imagine they would grow well in Portugal on a gritty soil. What you are doing sounds right to me, and your plant should survive winters if kept well tended.

I have a large number of Dianthus of all kinds and none of them die back for Winter. In fact I cannot think off hand of any deciduous Dianthus.
Dead heading is a good idea as it does prolong the flowering season otherwise all they need is well drained soil and a bit of sun and away they go.

It is a perennial so will die back totally in the autumn and then grow again next spring.
