No sorry Derekm it's not viola biflora - I have googled it and it is quite different. The flower looks more like a brassica flower. But thanks for the suggestion.............Hazel

I would have a guess at Viola biflora, a dwarf, creeping, herbaceous perennial, prefers moist soil in partial shade, and is quite hardy, Derek.
