do penstemons need support?

mine seem to be growing on ground level. Do I need canes to hold them upright?

The Penstemon species that we grow are low growing and almost ground cover plants.

most of mine tend to be self supporting but there are others with a more lax habit and as yet i havnt staked them. but i will in the next week or so if they dont firm up.

No, not normally. They are quite sturdy bushy plants and I don't normally need canes for mine.
