Didn't realise there was a plant with this name! Our local Lidl sells Black sambuca which is a lovely liquorice/aniseed liqueur. Very nice (too nice!)

Its a variety of elderberry Julie, with lovely dark red leaves and pink flowers. Steady on with the drinkable version!

Just got one so I am hopping on for interest..
I would have thought to prune right after the flowers and before berry stage ?

Yep, Pimpernel's right - you probably pruned off the stems which would have flowered when you cut them in September 2011. You can prune it during winter if you want, but its always best to leave some stems to flower the following year and reduce the rest, if you're trying to keep it at a certain size or shape.

I have Sambucus 'Black Lace' which I think is my favourite shrub. Even one done from a cutting a couple of years ago is flowering profusely even though it is only three feet high.
I suspect that exactly as Bamboo says you have pruned off the flowering stems. Elders should be very carefully pruned simply taking out the very old wood and allowing new stems to establish, a little bit like black currant bushes.

How long have you had it and have you pruned it - if you did, when did you prune?
