I did see quite a few dead bees laying about in various places just before the heatwave some weeks ago, around mid May. Can't say I've noticed any since, but then I've been stuck indoors mostly keeping out of the rain...

the bumble bees and honey bees are different types of bee . the small bumble bees are the equivelent of workers from the honey bees . being small they get cold quicker and are out of the nest more . bees are on the decline which is worrying but losing a few to a collany is nothing . each individual bee hasnt got much of a life span .

Not all bees live in colonies though. The solitary bee for example lives in a hole, alone. Ahhh! Its amazing how many varieties of bee there are - the Collins guide to insects illustrates and describes over 60 different ones! so the little ones aren't workers for the bigger ones after all.

As you say all sizes and shapes, I guess you mean not just honey bees but bumble bees too. Are you sure they are all 'dead' as bumbles particularly get chilled and unable to move due to the sudden cold. They come out in the sunshine and then are hit by the rain and cold. As like reptiles they are cold blooded they cannot move unless they have some warmth.
I suspect this will be caused by the sudden fluctuations in temperature in what is generally a very cold early summer across northern Europe.
The alternative, if you live in a rural area, is that they have all been visiting a field where the farmer has wrongly sprayed something in flower during the day time instead of waiting for evening. They do this all the time here, despite the regulations.
