Can I cut my Jasmine?

When my jasmine has finished flowering, can I prune it hard back? And, I mean hard - nearly to the ground maybe.
It's been in the ground for a couple of years and has had no pruning or training. It is now very untidy with leaves and flowers only at the top and nothing at the bottom except a bare twisted stem.
It is interfering with my clematis (or will be) and if I can't cut it back, I may have to remove it altogether which I'd rather not do.

But, ummmmm, never having had a jasmine before, how do I know what are the older pieces? And what about all the lot that is waggling all over the place with the flowers on now? Are they old or new? I don't know if this flowers on old wood or not.
Bit thick when it comes to this thing, lol.

Hi Llew,
The bits flapping about with the dying flowers on the top are the young branches, the thickest pieces at ground level are the oldest. Cut a thick piece at ground level and gradually pull it out from the bush, cutting back as you pull and untangling it from the rest of the bush. Continue until you think you've thinned it out enough, tidy up the straggly bits sticking out, give it a feed and leave it alone.
