what is this climber?

United Kingdom

Can anyone help me identify this plant. In the winter it just looked rather twiggy with a few leaves near the top but then got all these lovely flowers (about 3 weeks ago.Hopefully the photo is good enough to show the unusual leaves. thanks

Hi GD & welcome, well I can be confident in stating it is a Clematis... I can also say it isn't alpina or montana, nor is it one of the big fancy hybrids, after that I am a bit stuck. C. orientalis had leaves like your Celematis but yellow bell like flowers (I know as we have). Oh well, I'm sure someone else will have the perfect i.d.

GoY'er Andrewr has just posted a picture of Clematis 'Guernsey Cream' that looks just like this.

Hello - I got (what might be) one of these from the rescue bit of the garden centre, but it has only had two flowers, once...been a long recovery period! Leaves look the same. This year has put lots of new leaf growth, still no flowers yet. Label had: clematis paniculata lobata - evergreen scented climber, clusters of white starry flowers in spring.
Might be that?

It's not 'Guernsey Cream' but I'm fairly certain it's a form of clematis x cartmanii from the foliage. The most common cultivar is 'Joe' but there are others too

I have this definately a Clematis, but unfortunately like a lot of my Clenmatis I have miss laid the name, I bought it as an Evergreen winterflowering Clematis but it is now at this time it flowers. Lovely bunches of flowers set on about six stems which then split into another three stems from one point in the leaf axil forming beautiful clumps of flowers. Sorry I am so careless! If I see it in a garden centre I must note its name.

Hello Garden D' I have found the name of our Clematis it is "Avalanche" plant in a sunny position grows to 6-8ft flowers April to May no pruning necessary and one of the biggest and best of the Cartmanii group of Evergreen Clematis. How's that for you. Now I can label mine. Just shows, when you put your mind to things what you can achieve!!!!

Wow - thanks everyone - such a wealth of knowledge!
I hadn't even considered Clematis - lots of my neighbours have them but they all have much bigger flowers than mine and different leaves.
