Thank you for the replies on which way up begonias go. I do realise which they are are when they are new and clean, but when they have been stored over the winter, they have lots of soil etc. Should I wash them to reveal their true selves???

I suppose you could but I repeat what I said before - store them in a tray the right way up while you can still tell which is top. Often you can see the dried up remains of roots on the bottom side. And you can always follow the other suggestion and plant them on edge - by the time they are beginning to grow you'll be able to tell.
