What shrub can I grow as a tree

Can anyone suggest an evergreen shrub which I can train to grow as a one or possibly 2 stemmed tree. Two years ago I paid over £100 for an 8' Photinia Red Robin grown as a standard tree (not a 'lollipop'). Very sadly (given the price!) it died after about 18 months despite my best care and I would now like to have a go at growing my own but maybe not a Red Robin if anyone has other ideas.

Have you thought of a purple Smoke Bush? They get those interesting fluffy bits.
