Well I never, BBM - I wonder why the gay youths adopted that as a symbol, fascinating...
Not sure passionflower and the loaves and fishes story are connected Bristolbob. As far as I recall, weren't they by the sea or somewhere and 5,000 people turned up to listen to Jesus and there wasn't food for everyone, so 10 fishes were caught and turned into enough to feed all, and water was turned to wine for all, or something like that. I think that's where the expression 'feeding the 5,000' comes from.

No idea on that Bamboo, but i'm sure the fish and loaves story is not connected to Passiflora

I've found this Bamboo so now im confused
The centre of this flower depicts the loaves and fishes, surrounded by the multitudes that Jesus fed. The outer petals represent the disciples of Jesus. That is why it is called the passion flower.

I've never heard the connection with the feeding of the 5000! The name "passion" must surely refer to the passion and death of Jesus Christ? Hence the symbolism of the crown of thorns, wounds, nails etc.

Oh gawd, cheery lot really - nails, thorns, wounds, lovely, helps me dinner go down a treat, lol! BBM - just goes to show you can find at least 2 stories to explain almost everything... it's an awfully long time since I did any bible reading...

« why do the leaves on my evergreen clematis at the bottom keep dying off
I don't know about the 'loaves and fish story' but I knew it was all to do with Jesus so I googled this the other day and found this:
The five petals and five sepals are the ten disciples less Judas & Peter. The corona filaments are the crown of thorns. The five stamen with anthers match the five sacred wounds & the three stigma the nails. This symbolism is not universal however, in Japan it is sometimes known as 'The Clock-faced Plant' and apparently has recently been adopted as as symbol for homosexual Japanese youths.
