Pea Problems

My dad's tried several times recently to plant peas but each time, after a few days, holes appear in the soil (about an inch deep and an inch across) underneath the shoots, as if something is attacking and eating them from below. The plants are protected by mesh, and he's also put slug pellets and rat poison down - any idea what could be causing this?

You could have mice eating your peas, soak another lot in paraffin, sow and see what happens.
