What sand should l use

I am planting some grass seeds and have been advised to put sand down first, what sand should l use

Why does one need to put sand down?Is it necessary if you have a good fine tilth.?

Sharp sand's fine, but I used to use silver sand (that was all I'd got!) mixed with peat in a layer, then throw the seed on top of that, then a thin covering of the mix. Worked well for me.

Sharp sand is best. Not play sand.
