Ceanothus 'concha' has lovely deep blue flowers. I have grown this as a shrub and it got to about 8 feet tall even though I pruned it ever year. It blew over in a gale after about 5 years so I don't know how big it would have got but it does grow fast so might make a good tree. Interesting idea, might have a go myself as am looking for an evergreen shrub to grow as a tree.
