A number of the Geans and other cherry trees in this area are showing a severe attack of some kind. Some of the smaller trees are almost bare of leaves, the lower leaves being most affected in the larger trees. The leaves seem to start to get brown spots and then to curl up and die. I am worried for the trees in our garden. What is causing this? Is there anything that I can do?

Given the prolonged wet weather I will guess this is 'Cherry leaf Spot'. If you Google image search it for confirmation that it looks like the same damage. If so, run another search for 'Cherry leaf spot control'
hopefully that helps.
