This is a variety of Ajuga or Bugle. It spreads by long root systems which quickly cover a large area, therefore very difficult to dig out from a lawn. I should think that all you can do is use a selective weedkiller for lawns that targets broad leaf weeds.

OK, I will go with Owdboggy's id. Very similar and the same comments apply.

Many thanks for the prompt reply guys,as a recent retiree I'm starting to take an interest in the rather frightening amount of lawn and flowers which I've just taken for granted up till now, so expect more questions.

I have it on a lawn too and in fact its rather pretty when its in flower. Weed and Feed discourages it - haven't tried the Verdone. But you could learn to love it!

They seem to be everywhere this year don't they? lovely and good for wildlife but not good in a lawn! Although I'm pleased to see them in mine. But then my 'lawn' is more like daisies, dandelions and now prunella with bits of grass in between. LOL

Self heal. Can be a right nuisance in the lawn. If it ever stops raining for long enough, then Verdone Broadleaf Weedkiller will help control it.
