You don't have to, but you can if you want to make it look tidier.

I hope your soil is slightly acidic. If not, mulch the soil with ericacaeous soil every spring and it should continue to flower nicely for you.

Removing the spent flowers also prevents the plant expending energy setting seed

You do have to make sure you just remove the dead flower but it isn't difficult

I usually just grab hold of the spent flower at the bottom and twist. That works well.

If I have removed the growing tips will the plant die, how do I prevent this? What is my next course of action?

i dont think it will die at all but reduces the following years flowers i think, by the way everyone, my rhododendron not look very happy at the moment,its perked up now its raining,so maybe it needs more rain,also could it be going dormant for the year this early,how is yours looking boss?

It was looking very well until I moved it to the ground, all the flowers fell off. We may have been a bit rough
