one of my copper beeches has produced very small, dry new leaves this year.

The other beeches have produced "normal" larger and silky new leaves. We live at about 900 feet in North-east Scotland, The trees can experience a lot of harsh winds, but all the other 40 or so trees we have planted have thrived. Can you help?

I don't know what's wrong with your tree, but it is true to say that small leaves are a good sign there is something wrong with the tree.....but you guessed that already! It could be anything really....has the soil level been altered at its base or anything piled up around teh roots? Otherwise, it might be something fungal.
