The red leaves are usually the young developing leaves and red leaves can be stimulated ( well with my hedge it does anyhow ) by a light pruning. In time they normally go green and any further new growth comes red yet again. All of this usually happens in late spring when the plant puts on new growth but I trim my hedge regularly to keep it in shape and have red leaves on the outside throughout much of the year
