Answers
The plant is Platycodon grandiflorus. They like well drained soil in sun. Mark the spot as they disappear soon after flowering and do not come back up again until late spring. If they set seed then they are very easy to grow from it. Indeed if suited they will happily self seed around the parent plant.

mel I said the same thing to her, said someone would say it was a catkin:~} he is a beautiful black cat and as us cat lovers know where a cat wants to go he does! She was chuffed to get the answer to what plant was and sends many thanks!
