I have 2 rowan trees and a cherry blossom which are growing far too long. Is there a way of taking something off the top of them to stop them growing longer.

Personally I have never pruned Rowen but I know that you can prune it back to keep it in the size of your garden. You can prune the offending branches as you wish
For Cherry I would wait till autumn. You can keep the size of tree with maximal flowers by pruning every year in winter. Basically you keep pruning back to the last budding area every year.
