I am lucky enough to have a large garden. The house house is enclosed by sycamore trees to the south letting in very little daylight to the house. The east of the house is a large grass scrum area the ground is clay and heavy rocks. Would like to create a large bush area with bark covering. What kind of bushes should I go for that cover a large area but don't grow to high.

I have heavy clay soil - Patio Roses have done well for me but they need plenty of space, you would have to shorten the runners to suit the size of ground. Make a lovely show in the summer.

The majority of shrubs grow about as wide as they do tall so if you want smaller you'll just need to plant more of the smaller type shrubs .
When you say too high... how high do you mean ?
