This Hebe has been in my garden for many years, did not flower last year or year before (probably because it was so dry), has flowered well this year but most of the flowers and leaves are on the top and it is quite bare at the bottom where it died back last year. Its about 5' tall and 3' wide.
I don't know what its called (hope someone can give me a name). Would it be OK to prune it, and if so when? There are a few signs of new growth lower down.

Thank you for your advice 2ndhand. I'll do as you suggest, and take some cuttings as back-up. When is the best time to take the cuttings please?

I take them anytime from spring through to end of August.

Sorry, I can't tell you the name of your variety, but if it has new growth in near the base, then you can cut it back. I would trim at least 1/2 of the long branches back once it has finished flowering. Then next year remove the other half of the old growth. You could also take cuttings, they are very easy to do. Unfortunately for me, I have to treat the taller varieties as short lived shrubs, they last about 3yrs, so I always have to keep a supply of cuttings going to replace them near the original.
