Tonight for the first time our lawn was covered in what looked like maggots (white and about 2cm long). We relaid the turf 3 years ago and it's the first time this has happened. An idea what they could be and what could have caused it?

A guess is leatherjacket larvae.

Leatherjacket grubs eat roots, especially grass roots - so your lawn dies and falls off in brown patches.
