At the minute all we have is lawn but i have been slowly buying new plants, i currently have whisteria, bottle brush, hot lips a stunning Acer with some ferns to plant under it, oh and also have one of those smoke bushes. I would just like some help on where i shoukld plant them and also any other ideas on plants that would go well in my garden, i will take some photos so you can see my progress.

Hi Teddyflo welcome to GOY. Its exciting to plant a new garden. Do you have any photos of your plot? as that would help with any suggestions.

Look forward to your photos and thats a good size to start on. If you go to the bottom of the page and click on a letter it will take you to members photos that show what can be done. One suggestion is go to B and click on 'Back garden ideas'. Or S for 'Small garden ideas' well worth a look. There are also ideas for children in the garden.

Just another quick one, the whisteria i have has been in a pot for two years its doing ok but has had no flowers as yet. When i plant it i was going to train it along a fence but what should i use and will this help it flower.

You will need a trellis of wood or wire support to anchor it to as you train it in the direction you want. If you look in garden centres or on line you can look at wooden trellis to put on your fence or hook and eyes with lines such as the Grippel plant support System.
I think it may take sometime to flower yet, avoid using a high nitrogen fertilizer, use a superphosphate each spring. Make sure your wisteria gets at least six hours of full light a day and above all be patient.

Just a suggestion about the smoke bush - they look lovely with the sun shining through the leaves, especially in the early evening, so if you can, position it with that in mind.

Your wisteria will be heavy when it is mature so make sure that the trellis you train it on is good and strong as it will be difficult to replace it from underneath a big mature plant. Bear in mind that a wisteria will live much longer than a fence like yours will stay strong.
