I have a japanese acer in a tub it has been healthy for 20 years approx (bark mulch on top)
This year some of the branches had no leaves on them some had full leaf
Is there anything I can do to encourage leaf growth next year

New tub, new soil and some effort too. We knew someone whose whole large garden display consisted of mainly Acers in rather large pots. She was very secretive about her collection of semi Bonzaied plants. Every three years or so it was all hands to the pots. Big delivery of ericaceous soil and sore backs all round I should think.
