weathered plants

hi all . i bought two palms from a garden centre four months ago ,one is a chamaerops humilis and the other is a phoenix canariensis. they were both 12ins when bought and both are now 32ins and looking very healthy bearing in mind of the great weather we having at the moment. in books i have read they say once weathered they can be planted into the garden and will see the winter out ok . my question is , how do i know when they are weathered. will it be best for me to put them in the shed this winter and wait til next year before planting in the garden ?

I see you live in Northumberland and I imagine it gets pretty cold in the winter there! Your plants are already weathered, if they're four months old, so you can plant them out, but up there, they might need a bit of protection in the winter ,unless you've got a nice, sheltered spot that gets sun for them. You could wrap some fleece round them for the winter - in London I never bother and they're fine, but not sure about up there. Even in pots, they may need the pot wrapped to protect the roots from freezing.
