can you identify this tree and seed

I think this may be a poplar/cottonwood. There are several of these trees growing along the tow path from Putney to Hammersmith and a few weeks ago their seeds were like cotton, lining the path and flowing into the air see the photo

we had one when I was a lad, always made a mess when my father was putting on some do or other! black poplar if I remember correctly,rotten sort of tree,drops branches with no warning and the wood is poor quality.
