Best done in spring, after any catkins have finished, as as it starts growing more strongly, so around early May. It doesn't have to be pruned, it's only if you want to restrict the size of the crown or shape it. If its a standard its grafted, so don't cut back beyond the graft at the top of the trunk/stem.
