What causes carrots to grow as attached photo. These were grown the same as last year in a large tub with composted soil from the garden centre. Last year I had superb carrots. It is not just one carrot, they are all the same.

Carrots grow best in a very fine, lean soil. No fertiliser or compost and no stones.

Odd though, if these were grown in exactly the same conditions as well behaved ones last year.

Mine did the same. They were in a huge pot with compost. No stones.
I did read carrots are best sown where they grow, this shaping can be caused by transplanting but I'm a newbie so don't take my word for it

I have never tried to transplant a carrot but would expect bifurcated growth if I did - carrots need to be sown in situ and thinned.

Could be that the soil is stoney or is a bit rich for them. I grow mine in old grobag soil that i have tipped into a tin bath.
