It will grow in shade/part shade, but the less sun it gets, the more likely it is the leaves will be green and not purple. Some sun in a day would likely be enough for the leaves to colour properly. I grow it outside myself, in half sun, half shade and its fine.

« which small conifers can I put in damp and shady area thank you
Its usually a tender plant over here and often grown indoors on a window sill. So I would not say it was a shade lover in the UK.
