It's hard to tell whether it's a bedding Dahlia or one of the big showy ones. Bedding dahlias do well either in pots, if well fed, or in the garden. The bigger dahlias fare better in the garden, although, having said that, I have three show dahlias growing in a large half-barrel and they're blooming lovely!
If you do put your Dahlia in the garden, beware slugs and snails...they love them!

It looks like a non-bedding one. Just remember that if you do plant it in the garden, then when the weather turns cold in autumn and the foliage begins to die down, you will need to either
-lift it, remove the foliage and knock soil off carefully and store upside down in a crate in a cool frost free place over winter.
Or apply a thick mulch over where the tuber is planted and mark it so you dont spear it with a spade later on! Only problem is if the soil becomes water logged, the tuber may rot.
