Vernonia Crinita 'Mammuth' (Ironweed)
Garden Centre > Plants > Perennials > I
Position: full sun
Soil: moist, fertile soil
Rate of growth: average
Flowering period: July to September
Flower colour: purple-crimson
Hardiness: fully hardy
Another favourite of the famous Dutch plantsman, Piet Oudolf, this cultivar has densely packed clusters of large purple-crimson flowers on sturdy, upright stems in summer and early autumn. As these die back, the fluffy white seeds become a feature as they turn shades of rust-orange. Tolerant of very low winter temperatures, it will need plenty of summer sunshine and moisture to thrive in. A top plant for prairie-style planting schemes, it looks particularly stunning planted amongst tall grass where the flowers shimmer amongst the silky grass plumes.Garden care: Protect young plants from slug damage. Cuttings can be taken from new growth in early summer but they tend to be slow to root. Larger clumps can be divided in late spring.
